Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) are molecules used by the body for energy. In contrast to Long Chain Triglycerides (LCTs) – the predominant form of fat in the American diet – MCTs have a number of unique properties that benefit people’s health in a big way. Athletes, especially, appreciate the effects of MCTs. That’s because MCTs not only enhance energy (and athletic performance), they can also help with post-exercise recovery.
Athletes have been using MCTs in the form of oil since the 1970s, but Robert Seik – CEO and co-founder of Triton Nutrition – believes it has now become a “forgotten nutrient.” That’s why he and co-founder Rico Ebetino have added a product to their line (MCT Oil) that will once again bring this amazing substance to the forefront of many athletes’ health regimens.
Two suggestions for using MCT Oil:
- Add 1-2 tbsp. of MCT Oil to protein shakes before endurance events.
- Use MCT Oil in salad dressings (see 3 examples below).
Other benefits seen through the use of MCTs include: antioxidant properties; help with absorbing calcium, magnesium, and amino acids; lowering blood sugar; and appetite suppression. Those seeking to lose weight often see quicker results with MCTs in their diet: less calories than other fats, not as readily stored in fat deposits, and enhanced metabolism – leading to faster burning of calories.
